Thank you for visiting our online shop! We hope you enjoy your experience browsing the beautiful handmade African baskets and wares we have brought together here. Whether you're decorating your space with meaningful objects or using our baskets for your local farmers' market bounty, please know that by doing so you are supporting an artisan who has lovingly handmade that product.
Here at African Weave we cater for the conscious consumer, our business philosophy is to trade with socially and environmentally ethical partners and individuals in developing African nations to bring you a small but colourful collection of African handwoven and handmade products.
We believe handmade objects imbue a sense of character, touch, time and authenticity. All of our products are handcrafted by artisans in their home country making each one as unique and special as the hands that skillfully formed it. We also source products made of natural and sustainable materials which always impart a feeling of homeliness into any space and are kind on the planet. So whether you're adorning yourself or decorating your home you know it's with a one of a kind, meaningful object.
We are a mother and daughter team, Kate and Emma Johnson, and our story goes a little something like this...
African Weave was founded in 2005 on the Gold Coast, Australia, by Kate Johnson. The business was born out of a love of African basketry, textiles and handcrafts but grew into a true appreciation of the hard work, skill and talent that goes into the creation of traditional handcrafts. Kate started out with the ever beautiful and practical Bolgatanga Market baskets from Ghana and over the years has sourced a great variety of other African basketry, crafts, textiles and musical instruments from many African countries including Ivory Coast, Ghana, Mali, Ethiopia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and South Africa.
After 12 years at the helm Kate has recently taken a step back and I, her daughter Emma, have stepped up to take on the day to day running of our small business and expand on our market stalls by offering our products online. I come from a Visual Arts and Ceramics background and love to travel! As such, I can appreciate the time, resources and skill that go in to creating hand made products and value traditional craft practices as a way of preserving cultural heritage and generating an income for the artisans who produce these beautiful objects.
Both Kate and I have always had a keen eye for colour, interior decoration and design. Our hope is to bring you a beautiful collection of objects that you too can use in your everyday lives from Bolgatanga Market Baskets, which we are proud to offer as an alternative to plastic bags, to fabulous handmade glass bead jewellery, to classic African textiles such as Malian Mud Cloth.
Thanks again for stopping by and happy browsing!
